HELLO, MY NAME IS PAUL SMITH

After I visited the 'Design of the Year 2014' I went to the 'Hello, My name is Paul Smith' exhibition, at first I wasn't sure what could contribute to my project but I was open-minded and see it in a different perspective.

"Step into the world of fashion designer Paul Smith, a world of creation, inspiration, collaboration, wit and beauty. Celebrating his career to date and exploring future developments, the exhibition references Paul Smith’s influences and fashion designs, charting the rise of this quintessentially British label which has become one of the leading fashion brands in the world.

Looking at the impressive scale of its global operation today, the exhibition draws on Paul Smith’s personal archive, from the company’s beginnings in Nottingham to its international prominence today. The exhibition explores how Paul Smith’s intuitive take on design, together with an understanding of the roles of designer and retailer, have laid the foundations for the company’s lasting success and offer a unique insight into the magnificent mind of Paul Smith."

THE DESIGN STUDIO
As I entered the exhibition it was so overwhelming by the amount of prints and photographs that were hung up. It was an amazing sight to see such a variety of style, colour and shape into one place, it looks like organised clutter how it isn't aligned but did consider the placement to fill in the empty space. I used the panorama to capture the depth and space of it.

"I have been collecting prints and photographs since I was a teenager.

The collection includes famous artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Banksy, but also works which have been sent to me by friends, family and unknown enthusiasts since the 1990s. This is a very small part of my collection from the walls and basement of my office in Covent Garden, London." - Paul Smith
"The whole point of the exhibition is really about encouragement," he tells Dezeen while sat in a recreation of his cluttered Covent Garden office that has been created at the show. "It hopefully gives you the encouragement to think, well, 'I can move on from a humble beginning'," he says.

The exhibition highlights the depth of the designer’s vision and the many and various influences that shape his world. It was an amazing treat to obtain such an insight, dating back to the earliest designs sold form Paul’s bijoux boutique in Nottingham. The exhibition was a real testament to the designer’s visible passion for all things relating to art and culture, which I think really translates into his designs, as well as his infectious zest for life. After just a small peek into his world, I came away feeling invigorated and full of creative ideas myself.

PAUL'S STUDIO

I really liked this area because of the way the images is displayed with clipboards which fits with the theme of studio and office. I think it is a fresh idea to present images / text and I found it not only simplistic but practical.

COLLABRATIONS
In 2009, Paul Smith collaborated with Evian to design a limited edition bottle. The design was in vibrant colours that referenced the iconic Paul Smith multi stripe, imbuing the bottle with a sense of energy and fun.
From the individual garments selected from his many collections to the wall of literally thousands of differently-hued buttons, to the super-high-res video installation documenting his recent Paris runway show (featuring eye-popping acid pinks, vivid embroidery and pattern, inspired, it seems, by a visit to Rajasthan), colour pops from every surface.

In another voiceover segment, he decribes the camera as his "notepad", and photography is clearly something he is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about. Not only are there many works of photography he owns on display, but there are examples of Smith's own very accomplished work on show too.
