The morning portion of day 2 of lens based media, we watched a short 20 minutes film called 'Fridge' by Peter Mullan. It is a black and white film that tells a disturbing tale of a boy trapped in an abandoned fridge at the back of a housing estate and the attempts of an alcoholic couple to free him.
"For
me there’s no greater art form than the short film because it
condenses storytelling…it’s like a single. It’s not the album,
and for me the short films that don’t work, and it’s no fault of
the filmmakers, are the ones where they think it’s an album so they
want to put everything in." - Peter
Mullan
We analysed the film and came to the conclusion of how the film portrays people isolated in their own fridges and dislocated / confind the the world, and how it's done structurally. How the alcoholic couple faced obstacles which gave us as viewers a visual, sound and emotional impact.
In this process I learnt that in every story there is a ; -
BEGINNING - introduction of surroundings and characters
MIDDLE - problem / conflict / struggle
END - resolving
We then watched a few short films from Jane Campion and identify the beginning, middle and end to each film. Now that we established that we went into groups of 3 - 4 and with a A1 paper, we sketched out characters that had weird personalities and just characters that we've experience in dreams, in fear etc. Soon after we sketched out places that is safest in our opinions and somewhere fearful to be in, after these sketches we had a selective amount of characters and setting to use for our story board.
My own sketches of characters
Shani's and Shancie's characters
Our A1 paper with different characters and settings
Here is the list of stories (normal world) in which where characters normally do in everyday life, we used a mixture of characters from each other's drawings and combined to make unusual scenerios.
Then we had to come up with problems and obstacles to break the normal world the characters live in and a way to resolve it, we made three storyboards which each had six frames and we tried to capture the beginning, middle and end for these three stories.
During our SDS days we were instructed to create a story with a beginning, middle and end in a story board format like what I did today, here is my story (with the help of my minions!)
Story
(LM - left minion / MM - middle minion / RM - right minion)
So LM wanted to prank RM by shooting red liquid to him however in the distance MM knew LM's plan and tries to stop him before it'll occur, so as MM runs over to stop it LM shoots the red liquid from his gun and it was so powerful that it physically pushed him down. MM was too late and decides his revenge by pushing LM over for justice to RM (hence the smile on MM's face)
I think your ideas are really good here. However it would be better if you could explain each story from your group story board.
