Day 1: LBM

At the beginning of day 1 of the lens based media rotation, we had a presention of what really lens based media is and how many ways it's used and infused with other art subjects too. There is five main focus in LBM, such as; -
  • Animation
(filmmaking / character design / story boarding / game design)
  • Sound design
    (foley / production / recording / effects)
  • Film
    (directing / producing / scriptwriting / cinematography / shooting / lighting / angles)
  • Photography
(documentary / fine art / still life / portraiture / travel / fashion / narrative)
  • Television
(operations / post production / content creation)
  • Moving images
    (identities / trailers / logos / titles)

Then we looked at 'The power of the lens' which showed us some ways the different lenses and way to use lenses in everyday life and in the past, firstly we was exposed to the limitations of human form, for example we can't catch a fly most of that time because flies move in a slower time dimension to us humans and therefore have 'time' to avoid being hit. In this sense size plays a role when it is associated with time and how it's not the same for every animal. Then we looked at Galileo who used telescope to prove that the sun was the centre of the world, the use of telescopes and microsopes help us to see things the human eyes can not catch. But we have natural lens like water and our eyes.

After the discussion of lenses we looked at life outside the frames, capturing movements and analysing examples of photography (capturing speed/movement - sound - technology - radiation images - x rays - time (past / present / future) - illusions)

In preparation of the LBM rotation, we were told to being pictures of our environment and we had to draw our photograph on A1 paper with our choice of medium.

My chosen photo - I chosen this photograph of the North Greenwich station because it is a place where I encounter because of Ravensbourne and I personally like how the path curves into a place where it's unknown. The place had good lighting and I thought the structure of the station would be interesting to draw, it is also a metaphor applied to myself because at the moment I'm unsure what pathway to choose (hence why I'm doing a foundation course) I don't know where I'll be so the end is somewhere where I hope I will be satisfied.

[progression - complete outcome - detailing]

After completing my piece with pencil, I had to select parts of the piece that cut out unnecessary thingsand perhaps tell a story, I used masking tape to select my work.
We had an activity where we had to use our environment to create a sequence of photos to illustrate fall / crush / echo / sad / happy / jump.

Fall - Taking advantage of being on level 9 at Ravensbourne, I took a photo of the view outside from the window looking downwards. It captured the depth and comparison of height, I included part of the window to show a sense of positioning in the photo and give the impression of being at the edge and looking down like the camera did.

Echo - This plain space in Ravensbourne reminded me of 'echo' by the lack of furniture or substance in this area, it feels like it will echo by the depth of the space and how enclosed it is.

Crushed - Obviously the lift was a good way to present crush by the two doors physically collide to closed the door, I have taken a photo of the mid-process before it closed.

Happy - The back of this chair reminded me of happy simply because it was a bright colour in comparison of the dark, metalic surroundings. The cut out of the chair and how it curves resembling a smile is another reason why I chose this photo, with both the colour and the curve, I thought it was very fitting.
Jump - Here is my photo to illustrate 'jump', I took a photo where I made my camera move to create a blurred image that mimics the vision we see when we jump, I captured the ceiling, wall and floor to have the impression of being in mid-air.

Sad - Here I took a photo of a man sitting down while being on the phone, the composition of this photo emits sad as his surrounding is empty and only revealing his back, it can question what is he feeling? why is he alone?
