Yesterday Cecile from Gilles & Cecile Studio came to Ravensbourne to give a lecture about her work and many ways they have used art in many forms for different companies and businesses. Gille & Cecile Studio was founded in 2008 and they design, illustrate, create, paint walls and share knowledge through lectures, talks and workshops.
"Gilles and Cecilie operate in the fields of illustration, fashion,
architecture and interiors and aim to build a brand that provide design
service and consultancy as well as lifestyle products like apparel,
interior accessories and public space." - Gille and Cecile website
There were a few works of theirs that I find very interesting and wanting me to create a respond to it, one of the few that caught my eye was an installing for Paul Smith in Milan, Italy. Their brief was to create a 3D installation for the Milan showroom atrium space. To be
inspired by the current collections theme of ancient star
constellations, the occult and Jimi Hendrix.
The mindblowing thing was the structure and positioning of each origami pieces to create a flawless outcome, the way the installation will look amazing from looking below and next to it. I like how the origami pieces represent stars as it amkes precise, neat geometrical objects. By hanging by a string(?) the origami can move freely and interlace like stars would. What was interesting for me was how they used recycled materials to achieve this installation, they used twelve used bicycle wheel frames to give the installation a strong base to work with, chains and a thousand colourful origami pieces.
