Day 1 pt.1 : Time Capsule

"Memory"
'noun (plural memories) the faculty by which the mind stores and remember information'

On day one I selected ten items from my past and present which were different in dimension and construction, these will be my starting point for inspiration to create a personal time capsule package.

The given task was to draw my ten items in different ways in terms of materials used, different styles/approaches, looking at it in another way or 'outside the box'.

~MY PAST~

Item 1: Old photo of my mum and I

Here I used a black felt tip pen to create this continuous line drawing of an old photo of my mum and I, the reason I picked this photo is because it was taken five to six years ago and I really like how it's focusing on facial features. I thought continuous line drawing would be appropiate because it represents time, over time my mum has seen me develop and grown just like how I created this drawing.

I tried to use lines to add facial features and tone to the look, I personally found this easy to do because I really like incorporating line drawings into my work and it's my favourite way to draw. I really liked the outcome because it highlights the tones and texture of a 2D  unique features we both have and therefore it is a successful drawing.

Item 2: Medal

This is a rough sketch of the detailing of the medal I was awarded with for Art, this medal represents my past since I received this in year 10 in Secondary School. I am passionate about Art-based subjects and it surprised me when I got the medal, it means a lot to me. The medal has a woman figure with wing and is holding a small boat. I only sketched half of the figure because I wanted to play around with mirror images and it will look interesting when a mirror is used.

Item 3: Bell ball

This is a ball that is made out of strips of plastic interwined with one another forming a sphere and inside the sphere, it has a little bell. I wanted to include this in my past items is because when I was younger I used to spend my summer in Summer Scheme, Summer Scheme was a place to learn arts and crafts. I really enjoyed it and it's possibly the reason why I love art now. This bell ball represents memories with friends creating crafts using the same plastic strips.

I recreated the construction of the bell ball by drawing the plastic strips and using shading to create a 3D effect, highlighting the interwining of each plastic strips. I like how it seems to play with your mind as you follow each strip, as it leads you under or over another. I also like the positioning of the bell slightly peeking through in the middle. If I were to improve this piece, it would be to include a shadow undermeath to show it sitting still.

I wanted to do a second drawing to illustrate the different colours of the plastic strips by using different patterns representing a colour. This way it is much easier to identify where each strip leads to, I used a pencil for both drawings.
Here is a comparison picture of both of the drawings.

Item 4: Old note from my old friend

This is my interpretation of an old note and sketch from a friend of mine. The original note was a sketch of me and a message wishing me luck for Secondary School, I thought it would be interesting to put this in my items because it shows evidence of an old friendship we had. It reminds me of old friendship formed in primary compared to now where I rarely talk to her. I drawn the orginal sketch from her with a thick blue pen and using a light blue felt pen to fill in the hair with the message. Personally I feel this is lacking and so if I were to improve it, it would be to had tone to the drawing using letters and creating three dimensional features.

Item 5: Toy

This toy was randomly given to me by my old ICT teacher in my last lesson with him. Although it isn't a significant memory, it was a funny memory because it was unexpected and it was nice thought from him. I really like the positioning of the toy sitting down on all fours and the basic colours on it. I tried a different approach by using basic shapes such as triangles, rectangles and semi-circles.

~MY PRESENT~
Item 6: Mirror

To be honest, I struggled on what items that will represent my present self. I brainstorm ideas and researched online for help and then I thought of my appearance right now, a mirror is a way I can see my reflection and it represents me in present time. I did a quick sketch of my mirror opened and closed because it shows that once it's closed, the reflection won't be the same as the last time.

Item 7: Ravensbourne ID card

I used my Ravensbourne ID to represent my present since it is what I am now, a student of Ravensbourne. It is now part of my identity and my present. For this I created my ID using straight lines and coloured fine liners to achieve this look, by drawing lines in between lines gives the illusion of an opac colour, I used this technique particularly on the neck and the Ravensbourne logo.

This is a close up of me in my ID card, I used yellow, orange, brown and black to add tone and structure to my features. I tried a gradient background using two different blues.
